Up The Wall With JoBo

JoBo has been part of the TomboyX family since the beginning. Hailing from Brighton, England, this energetic tomboy spends her days high in the sky as a flight attendant and is training to be a pilot. We caught up with JoBo at Stone Gardens while she got in some climbing between flights.

Tomboys play hard; we gathered some badass boxers to test out how our gear held up. Curve Magazine liked the idea so much, they decided to showcase the results in their Winter issue (grab a copy at the newsstand to see these bad-ass photos in print)! Keep scrolling to see the full photoshoot and judge for yourself whether TomboyX gear is workout-worthy.

Veteran's Day Salute: Bekah La Due

Meet Bekah La Due: a mother, Air Force veteran and all around bad-ass.     Tell us about yourself.  I enlisted in the Air Force when I was 22, as an Airfield Management Operations Coordinator. I completed my 4-year enlistment and then shortly after was diagnosed with PTSD (over a year after I returned from my deployment, it took that long to go through Veteran Affairs and finally get a diagnosis). Around that same time, I had dropped out of college and had quit 3 jobs. I was mentally struggling and didn’t understand why. In 2010, people weren’t talking about...

Breast Cancer Awareness: Fran's Story

I was 42 years old, working as a freelance video producer so I only had catastrophic health insurance. My girlfriend at the time was a Physician’s Assistant and volunteered for a weekend gig at a free women’s health screening clinic. She’d been after me for a while to get my 40 year old mammogram. I kept blowing it off due to cost. The opportunity for a free one sounded good so I headed in. A week or so later I got a call from the clinic who did the free screening. They had found something and wanted me to come...

GAME CHANGER: Joanna Lohman

Everybody has something in them that makes them different or unique from others. Jo’s uniqueness lies in her having found her cool. She’s leaned in to her life and soccer career and become a game changer.  She's the shortest on her team and yet has scored the most goals with her head. She's one of the slowest on her team but yet has logged some of the most mileage on the field. Jo’s leadership and drive on the pitch is an important part of the Washington Spirit's success right now as they head into the NWSL Semifinal Playoffs. Off the field Jo...

Interview by Shannon Hames | Photos by Shena Lee Growing up playing ice hockey in Gunnison, Colorado, nobody guessed that little Hillary Buscovick would grow up to be one of the most revered roller derby players in the world. But that’s exactly what happened. After graduating from Western State College, Buscovick began to want to see what metropolitan life was like. In 2010, she packed her gear and landed in Portland, Oregon where she began to look for a competitive ice hockey league that she could play in and make new friends. Disadvantage - Exploring LGBTQ Inequalities Through Art

In 2016, same sex marriage is law of the land. That may lead some to believe that the fight for LGBTQ equality has been won, but we are still far from complete victory. Our guest blogger, Sheriden Vanhoy, used a senior thesis to illustrate the daily struggles still faced by the LGBTQ community. There is still a Disadvantage.       Disadvantage all started when I was given the task to choose a major social issue for my senior thesis. This issue would be the topic of every design project I worked on my final year of my design degree, and...

Divided We Stall

Divided We Stall

We're not sure if you've noticed, but the world has become increasingly divided, increasingly us vs. them. Increasingly pick-a-lane-and-stay-in-that-lane. Oh, you noticed? Then living under a rock must not be your mailing address.    As the Supreme Court—this particular Supreme Court—surprisingly knocks down barriers, and as gender identity issues move into the bright light of pop culture, we risk turning in on ourselves. Like waves that crest after a long journey from the deep sea, only to start falling apart just as we’re reaching the shore.    Unity is a slippery thing, a shape shifting, color-switching chameleon of a thing. A sometimes fleeting and born-of-the-moment thing. It bubbles up...

Our Kickstarter Pioneers

TomboyX was ‘born’ on March 13, 2013 – the day our Kickstarter campaign successfully raised $76,000. Created by the contributions of 663 people who found it in their hearts to support the dream that Naomi and I shared. At that time, it was all about a shirt. We bootstrapped the design of a button down, two polos and a knit blazer. We chose the name Tomboy because we thought it reflected our independent spirit and we wanted to reclaim a word that had been used in a derogatory way in our past. We launched our Kickstarter campaign, Facebook page...

Naomi and I worked the booth at Boston Pride last weekend, went to sleep celebrating our community and grateful for time with good friends. We watched in horror as the death toll mounted, imagining the devastation to the patrons and their families.   As business owners and members of the LGBTQ community, the travesty in Orlando has left Naomi and I deeply saddened. Our entire team has felt this loss at a very deep level. It's hard to shake.   I came out...

Non-Profit Highlight: Women’s Sports Foundation

‘Tis the season to be giving and at TomboyX, we wanted to put a spotlight on one of our favorite non-profit groups, the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF). Started in 1974 by the great Billie Jean King, the mission of this group is to encourage participation of women and girls in sports. The work of Women’s Sports Foundation shapes public attitudes about women’s sports and athletes, builds capacities for organizations that get girls active, ensures equal opportunities for girls and women, and supports physically and emotionally healthy lifestyles. WSF has relationships with more than one thousand of the world’s elite female...

Get Out There: Living in the Moment at Fuel Coffee

TomboyX is excited to participate in the travel series from Autostraddle and Lez Backpack, Get Out There. This week, we are all visiting a local coffee shop!    Fuel Coffee in Seattle, WA   Often times, when I tell people I live in Seattle, their reaction is usually a combination of assumptions about non-stop rain, suicide rates, and that everyone listens to grunge music & wears fleece. Sure, there’s some truth to some of those things (except suicide rates, that’s a total myth), but there’s one reputation we have that I am very proud to boast: we have the best coffee in the USA. Period.  Not...

Police Detective and Good Carma inspiration: Carma Clark

Can’t go a day without your Good Carma undies? Thank this woman. Not only is Carma the story behind one of our bestselling undies, she’s also an incredible tomboy with a fine history of public service.   Carma in her signature "Good Carma" boxer briefs. What was it like growing up as a Tomboy? I was usually out in the garage with my dad. Anything to avoid house cleaning or cooking. My dad was a plane mechanic, so we were always fixing or riding something. In fact, I got into my first motorcycle accident at 3. Well, my dad was...

Coming back from that life-altering injury has been a long road, but Doris continues to give back to the community through fund-raising for AIDS research, volunteerism and being a huge encouragement to everyone around her. For these reasons, we wanted to introduce you to one of our favorite tomboys.   Doris Whitehair - Inspirational badass.   Tell our readers about your accident. Tomboy Thanksgiving Traditions: Julie Nomi

Thanksgiving is the quintessential American holiday. A time to gather with close friends and family, reflect and be grateful for each other. And a tomboy Thanksgiving is, if anything, a little better. This holiday, we want to share the traditions of one of our favorite tomboys, our Director of Product Development, Julie Nomi. Julie is not only the person behind the exceptional quality and comfort of your favorite undies, but she is also a part of a family of Italian and Japanese history, and Thanksgiving traditions that span from coast to coast.       What does Thanksgiving Day...

Papa's got a brand new bag!

A tomboy can never have too many bags, and that is certainly true of Naomi and me. So two years ago when we found the bag maker MariClaRo we were delighted. We had seen the bags made of seatbelts but these were something much more. Because MariClaRo bags are made of reclaimed car seats (think rich, thick leather with seatbelt straps). They are made incredibly well, with lots of pockets, zippers and even some padding to protect your laptop. They are made in a small town in Ontario. The owner Sven works with local townspeople who hand sew them. It usually...

CamJams – Sweet Dreams Are Made of This

About a year ago, Naomi and I joined some friends for a weekend getaway. Our good friend Cindy was there and when she wasn’t out in the water crabbing for our dinner, she was looking super comfortable and adorable in some flannel pajama’s. They felt old school in their quality, heft and attention to detail. They were made for men and came from a company that no longer makes them.   Cindy, crabbing in the mist.     We moved from nostalgia to light bulb in about two seconds flat. Had we had cell coverage we would have called Julie...

It is time to take a moment to appreciate all who serve and have served our nation. In the TomboyX spirit, we want to highlight some of the badass women who are sometimes overlooked for their sacrifice and service. Today we honor Air Force Veteran Julie Thompson. The BFF is back and we’re gonna call her Charlie. Hey la, Hey la, the BFF is back!

History Reprised. TomboyX got its start after a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2013. As part of the campaign we offered a $40 pledge level that included the original BFF t-shirt. In choosing the right shirt to put our logo on, we evaluated over 20 sample shirts. We chose the BFF because of the soft hand (how it feels in your hand), the comfortable fit (wasn’t made too tight fitting) and the cool contrast color stitching. In true startup fashion, we had just one sample made and took photos of it, and offered it on the Kickstarter campaign. This t-shirt...

VERGE: Challenging Gender Norms One Design at a Time

The stud models of designer Jag & Co.    The team at TomboyX made their way east for one of the largest fashion events in the world: New York Fashion Week. When reflecting on elite fashion events of the past, the vision of model monoculture comes to mind: a legion of almost identical figures walking in unison, ignoring the vast world outside the runway walls. This has resulted in an outcry for more body diversity- people of color and models who confront gender norms head on.  VERGE was the answer.      Models both back and on the main stage at...

You Know You Were a Tomboy When...

By: Shannon Hames Growing up as a tomboy, I was constantly battling the world and its feminine expectations of me. This meant having to fight expectations for me to dress, talk and act like it was expected that a girl should act. But true to my tomboy nature, I fought for my self-identity tooth and nail. Now that I’m an adult, I’ve had a lot of time to reflect on my tomboy childhood. I’ve laughed over the things that I’ve done and marveled with my fellow tomboys at how much we share with each other over common childhood experiences. Here...

The True Cost of Fashion

What is the ‘True Cost’ of Fashion? One of the things we often see on our Facebook wall and in our communications with our customers are questions about our pricing. Many consumers have been used to buying underwear and boxer briefs in multi-packs for $15-20 from their local mega store chain. They are surprised at our higher price point. We take the time to explain why we need to charge more but our short answers could never really convey all that needs to be said about the true cost of cheap clothing. Mary Doyle Keefe, the red-headed model for Norman Rockwell's 1943 painting, "Rosie the Riveter", died last month at the age of 92. The painting symbolized the millions of American women who went to work in support of the war effort during World War II. Keefe got the job of posing for the photo simply because she was Rockwell’s neighbor. At the time, she was a 19 year old working as an operator. She spent 2 sessions with Rockwell and was paid a total of $10 for her time. The painting made the cover of the Saturday Evening Post on May...

Going for the Gold!

No 'coulda' been a contender' statements here at TomboyX HQ - we're going for it right away! Women have been wearing men's boxer briefs for as long as they've been in existence; borrowing from their brothers/boyfriends or buying in the mens/boys department. Today you can do a search for women's boxer briefs and you'll find feminized versions that are 'boy cut' and made from inferior materials, often with adornments and cuts that detract from the reason that tomboys want to wear boxers in the first place: feeling comfortable in one's own skin. A Shirt's Odyssey: Sweet Caroline

The whole idea for TomboyX started because of a shirt. Or lack there of. I've never been a fool for fashion but I've always tried to look nice, wear matching colors, without stains or tears, but with a certain style. I've never felt very comfortable showing cleavage and the few times I've tried to pull off frills or ruffles I felt like an impostor in drag. In large department stores I'd longingly wander through the mens department, touching the amazing fabrics, admiring the contrasting colors in collars or along the lapel. I have so many friends who can actually wear...

As a tomboy, I know firsthand how challenging it is to find clothes and accessories that fit my tomboy style. We've identified the TomboyX woman as an active, independent spirited woman who doesn't typically find herself portrayed in the fashion industry. Our fashion icons are Amelia Earhart and Katherine Hepburn. We don't aspire to be identified as 'butch' but we do think that women who identify as such will find items they like in our collection. TomboyX is more about an attitude, a swagger and an independent spirit.   So when curating product for the TomboyX brand, we are...
