Detailed Wash & Care Guide
Our Pre-Care
At tomboyx, all of our fabrics are pre-washed during production to help remove potential irritants and ensure the softest feel. However, because everyone’s skin is unique, we still recommend washing any new garment before wearing.
Pre-washing helps to:
- Remove residuals: Even after production, small amounts of finishing agents, natural dyes, or treatment chemicals may remain in the fabric.
- Reduce sensitivities: Individuals with sensitive skin or allergies may react to trace residues, detergents, or even the natural fibers themselves.
- Minimize lint and dust: Transport and handling can introduce particles that may cause irritation.
-
Preserve hygiene: Washing ensures freshness after packaging and shipping.
Soften fibers further: A first wash relaxes cotton and spandex blends, improving comfort from the start.
By giving your tomboyx underwear a quick cold wash before first wear, you’ll ensure the best experience.
Care Details to Extend Product Lifetime
Washing Details
- Machine wash cold – Use cold water to preserve fabric elasticity and color vibrancy.
- Gentle cycle – Reduces stress on seams, waistbands, and printed surfaces.
- Mild detergent – Avoid bleach, harsh chemicals, or fabric softeners (these can weaken fibers and affect stretch recovery).
- Wash inside out – Protects the outer surface, reduces pilling, and preserves print finishes.
- Wash with similar fabrics – Avoid washing with items that have rough textures, zippers, or Velcro that could snag.
- Air dry flat or hang dry – Our product can be machine dry, but for maximum longevity we recommend air dry flat or hang dry.
Drying Details
Tumble drying (even low heat) breaks down elastic and shortens garment life. If using a dryer is necessary, choose the lowest heat setting.
-
Shrinkage protection: Cold wash helps prevent cotton shrinkage.
Elastic care: Spandex fibers degrade faster under heat, so avoid hot water and high dryer temps.
Softness retention: Avoid over-drying; cotton can stiffen and lose softness if exposed to prolonged heat.
Glow-in-the-dark prints
Helps to maximize the glow if you place it under black light / UV light for a few minutes
- Wash inside out to protect luminescent pigments.
- Avoid strong detergents with brighteners; they can dull glow pigments.
- Recharge prints by laying in sunlight or under a lamp after drying.
Foil shine prints (metallics, shimmer, etc.)
- Hand wash or delicate cycle, always inside out.
- Avoid friction (no heavy tumble drying, rubbing, or ironing directly).
- Place garments in a mesh laundry bag to minimize abrasion.
-
Do not dry clean – solvents can damage metallic coatings.
All-over prints or graphics
- Turn inside out before washing.
- Cold water prevents cracking or peeling.
- Skip dryer; heat accelerates cracking of ink-based prints.

Extra Tips for Longevity
- Use a mesh lingerie bag – Prevents stretching and protects delicate finishes.
- Skip ironing – Direct heat can ruin elastic waistbands and special print techniques.
- Spot clean when possible – For light stains, spot treat with mild detergent rather than over-washing.
- Rotate wear – Giving underwear at least 24 hours of rest after wear allows elastic fibers to recover.
Why We Recommend Gentle Care Products
- No Bleach – Bleach breaks down natural cotton fibers and spandex, causing thinning, holes, and loss of stretch. It also fades colors and damages specialty prints.
- Mild, Clear Detergents – Harsh or heavily fragranced detergents can irritate sensitive skin and weaken elastic fibers over time.
- Clear, mild formulas are gentler on both fabric and skin.
- No Fabric Softeners – Softeners coat fabric with a residue that reduces breathability, locks in odors, and breaks down moisture-wicking properties. They also degrade spandex elasticity, shortening garment life.
