It’s never too early to start thinking about your Valentine’s Day plans. For some of us, that involves kicking back with our favorite show, a cuddly cat, and a pint of ice cream. For others, it means a romantic dinner with your partner. It can also be a day to celebrate non-romantic love, spent partying with friends or baking sweets for loved ones.

Whatever your Valentine’s Day looks like, you deserve to be shown some love –– with awesome, comfortable undergarments, that is.

And don’t worry, we’re not here to give you any old “his” and “hers” lingerie. Gender-neutral fashion is bigger than ever; with it comes some great gender-inclusive underwear options to rock on this year’s day of romance.

Without further ado –– let’s get into it:

The History of Valentine’s Day

Before we get into everything else, let’s take a brief look at the origins of this beloved holiday. While the history is a bit muddled, it is believed that Valentine’s Day dates back to the Ancient Romans, specifically a festival called Lupercalia. This festival celebrated the beginning of spring and, at the time, was marked with drunken revelry, as well as some rather surprising traditions.

According to popular belief, the name “Valentine’s Day" comes from a martyred saint named Valentine, who Emperor Claudius II had executed in the third century AD. As the story goes, Valentine arranged secret marriages during a time in which soldiers were banned from getting married. As a result, Valentine was jailed and sentenced to death; it is said that he fell in love with his jailor’s daughter, adding extra tragic romance to the tale.

Valentine was honored by the Catholics with the name St. Valentine’s Day. Over the years, the holiday has become associated with love, romance, and marriage. Shakespeare and Chaucer sentimentalized it in their writing.

Centuries later, with the Industrial Revolution of the 1800s, printing and cards became more widely available. Sending love notes and greeting cards on this day became popular as a result –– though the oldest known Valentine’s Day letter was written in 1477.

Finding Gender Neutral Valentine's Day Underwear: What To Keep In Mind

  1. Nothing Is Sexier Than Comfort

Whether you’re single or hitched on Valentine’s Day, everyone wants to spend this day of romance looking good. And the first step to looking good –– is feeling good! Make sure to find underwear that is soft, stretchy, and high-quality.

Fabulous underwear fabrics include cotton and TENCEL™ Modal. Cotton is known for being super soft and breathable; that’s why it’s a perfect material for underwear and sleepwear alike. TENCEL™ Modal is another type of natural fabric made from the pulp of beech trees. This sustainable material is known to be incredibly long-lasting, and some even say it’s twice as soft as cotton.

  1. Show Yourself Love With Gender Affirming Fits

Gender-neutral underwear has come a long way in recent years. You no longer have to settle for undergarments that have been shoved into a certain category. Rather than falling under a label, you can search for underwear that fits your specific needs and desires.

So, what comprises gender-affirming underwear? In short, it’s whatever kind of underwear makes you feel most comfortable in your own skin.

Several factors play into this: From color and pattern to the way it contours and falls on your body, all these things play a role in how an outfit makes you feel. Valentine’s Day is an especially important time to focus on self-love and confidence.

  1. Valentine’s Day Doesn’t Have To Be Pink

Part of dressing gender-neutral is to play with certain aspects that have been traditionally assigned certain “genders” in society. Blue and pink, for example, are colors that historically have been assigned to a gender binary, but now, they’ve been reinvented by Monica Helms in the form of the pink and blue trans pride flag.

Let’s be real: anyone can wear any color they like.

Particularly on Valentine’s Day, there might be a certain pressure to wear pink because of its connotation with love, romance, and traditional femininity. However, feel free to play around with alternative colors if that’s what suits you. Even tonally neutral shades, like white or black, are welcome if they are what make you feel best.

Oh, but in case you do want some sexy scarlet underwear to get in a romantic mood –– don’t worry; we’ve got you covered.

  1. Get Sultry With Lingerie

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to get in touch with your sensual side. Everybody deserves to feel sexy on Valentine’s Day. Whether you’re dressing for yourself or for your partner, there are plenty of ways to strut your stuff in some smooth undergarments.

It really comes down to what you feel most confident in. When it comes to underwear, a thong or g-string is, of course, what first comes to mind when you think of seductive lingerie. They show maximum skin and plenty of cheek. You can also consider a strappy bralette for some subtle coverage up top.

  1. Celebrate Things You Love

The first thing that comes to mind when you think of Valentine's Day underwear might be a splattering of heart patterns. While that’s one great way to go, we know that there are tons of ways to express love, joy, and gratitude. Why not have the print on your underwear reflect things you’re passionate about?

There is a huge world of themed and pattern underwear out there. This can also be a thoughtful way to show your significant other that you pay attention to the little things. For example, if they told you about how they used to be super into dinosaurs as a kid –– now’s your chance to present them with a hilarious and adorable pair of Jurassic boy shorts.

  1. Get Them Flowers

When you think about classic Valentine's Day gifts, there are a few iconic ideas that stand out. Heart-shaped candy, chocolates, maybe even perfume or jewelry –– but one gift that everyone appreciates is flowers. Floral pattern underwear transports all the beauty of a bouquet to your very own clothes.

If you’re interested in giving a gift this Valentine's Day that is both sexy and sweet, consider this: a pair of flowery underwear paired with an actual arrangement of flowers is a cute way to show someone you care.

  1. Fly the Rainbow Flag

Valentine's Day is all about celebrating the love we have for the special people in our lives. With that in mind, it can also be a special time to take pride in all the strides that have been made over the years in the LGBTQ+ community. Since its conception by Gilbert Baker in 1978, the rainbow flag has stood as a symbol of pride and support for the LGBTQ+ community.

Different sexualities and identities are represented and shown support through this flag. When you wear the rainbow flag this Valentine’s Day, you’re celebrating love in its forms. And what’s more romantic than that?

We Love Love

When we get down to it, Valentine’s Day is all about treating people with a bit of extra love and affection –– and that includes treating yourself!

Feeling comfortable and confident in yourself goes down to the bottommost layer of your outfit. You deserve underwear that is comfortable, stylish, and makes you feel like your truest self –– so why settle for anything less?
